ATHLETIC PHYSICAL FORM ("CIPPE") UPDATE - 5/08

Effective June 1, 2008, use of the Comprehensive Initial Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation ("CIPPE") form becomes mandatory for all student athletes at PIAA member schools.  This form must be used to document a comprehensive physical preformed by an Authorized Medical Examiner ("AME").

*Re-Certification:  The Board of Directors, in adopting the CIPPE, intended that only ONE comprehensive examination occur each year.  The PIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee urged that some process of review was needed to ensure that a student who was later injured or become ill AFTER a CIPPE be re-assessed to determine whether she was able to participate in subsequent sports.  Because of that concern, the CIPPE requires that a Parent/Guardian complete a supplemental health history (included in Section 5 of the CIPPE) prior to each subsequent sports season.  A review of Section 5 is then made by the Principal, or the Principal's designee, who makes a decision as to whether the student will be required to be cleared by an AME prior to subsequent participation.  This check ensures that both the student's parent(s) and the school have at least reviewed the student's condition before deciding if a re-evaluation is needed.

*Timing of the CIPPE:  A student is ELIGIBLE for up to THREE CONSECUTIVE Sport Seasons following completion of a CIPPE.  However, all three season must be within the same school year, regardless of time completed.

The MANDATORY "CIPPE" form can be found under Athletic Forms for your convenience.

Mission

The Athletic Department at Gwynedd Mercy Academy(GMA) believes that athletics and participation in our athletic program is an educational activity that contributes to the physical, personal, social, and spiritual growth of the student-athlete involved, and therefore develops the student-athlete's unique talents and abilities to become a competent and compassionate Christian woman.

Objectives

The objective of all athletic teams at GMA is one of improving the level of play of the teams and individuals. Participation in sports provides a learning environment, a way of life which exemplifies the philosophy that hard work, discipline, drive, and determination bring eventual success.

"Winning at all cost" is not our goal!  Winning and losing with class and dignity are of equal importance to the concept of "the team."  Good sportsmanship, both as a winner and as a loser, and the concept of self-discipline and self-esteem are inherent parts of any student's participation.

Our coaches, athletes, parents, and spectators are expected to act as representatives of our school and thus are expected to be positive role models.

Participation in school sponsored sports teams is a privilege, not a right! To earn that privilege, student-athletes must abide by the established team rules and conduct themselves on and off the field/court, as a positive role model who exemplifies good character at all times.
