The English Department strives to engage students in the joys of reading, writing, and communicating effectively.  We value the literary canon in conjunction with other non-traditional works.


Meet the English Department Faculty!



Mrs. Jane Lane
Mrs. Jane Lane teaches 12th grade English which focuses on British writers, selected world authors, and writing styles.  She also teaches AP Literature and Composition and an Honors course for seniors entitled "Women and Literature."  She enjoys moderating Senior Homeroom 8 and the literary magazine called Imagination Collaboration
 
Mrs. Lane's favorite literary works include: Gone With the Wind, The Attack, The Woman in White, The Handmaid's Tale, The Wonder Year, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Macbeth. 
 
Mrs. Beckman teaches 9th and 10th grade English.  She also moderates our school Book Club. All interested students, staff, and faculty are welcome to join...check us out under "School Life."
 
Mrs. Beckman's favorite titles include: The Poisonwood Bible, To Kill a Mockingbird, Pillars of the Earth, Gulliver's Travels, The Kite Runner, A Lesson Before Dying, The Oddysey, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Pride and Prejudice, All Quiet on the Western Front, Girl With a Pearl Earring, The Fountainhead, and The Corrections.
   
Mr. Andrew Hopkins (Chairperson)
Mr. Hopkins teaches Junior English, which consists of an American Literature course, an Honors English section, and an AP English Language and Composition course. 
 
His literary interests include: 17th Century poetry; Irish Renaissance Literature; the Epic; Romanticism; Shakespeare; the Victorian novel; the Beat Movement; and the 19th Century Concord Writers.
 
Some of Mr. Hopkins' preferred readings include: Milton's Paradise Lost, Shakespeare's History Plays, Joyce's Ulysses, Dickens' Bleak House, Barrett Browning's Aurora Leigh, Virgil's The Aeneid, Thoreau's Walden, Fowles' The Magus, Mann's Doctor Faustus, Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Sterne's Tristram Shandy, Lodge's Small World, and Melville's Moby Dick.
