BLACK HISTORY MONTH
In recognition of Black History Month, Gwynedd students have been learning about and celebrating many great historical people and moments. Works developed this week in Dr. Derstine's '01 History classes can be found on display in the PAC Lobby area. The classroom lesson focused on the Critical Concerns of Women and Racism to ensure equitable representation of Black and African American Women's contributions in American History. The women selected represent "Hidden Figures," the unsung leaders, heroes and trailblazers who deserve to be elevated to the same level as their more commonly recognized contemporaries.
Students in Painting and Drawing class studied Amy Sherald and created master studies (copies) of her work. Amy Sherald is famously known for painting Michelle Obama's official portrait. Most recently, Amy painted a mural in Philadelphia, which Gwynedd art students will be viewing in person next month.
MISSION & MINISTRY
ACADEMICS
ART Students in the Honors Art Studio & Art History class spent a block period casting their faces with plaster. This is a continuation of their study of the figure as a historical genre of art. These portrait casts will be creatively transformed into contemporary masks with mixed media that represent individual expression. Masks have played an important artistic role in the history of human sociology.
ENGINEERING Intro to Engineering students recently completed a reverse engineering playground for children. Reverse engineering is a way to model from existing models. Pictured are the two groups projects. Intro to Engineering students completed an initial project of bridge making for civil engineers. The students were given one sheet of paper, 3 paper clips, and 6 inches of tape and had to build a freestanding bridge to withstand one hundred pennies between two text books 6 inches apart. Two of the bridges withstood the challenge.
THEOLOGY Mrs. Cymerman's Theology classes began presenting their Corporal Work of Mercy projects. Students shared their service project ideas and their classmates voted for their favorites. Stay tuned to see which projects will be done!
