CSI DAY: THE GMA WAY Contributed by: Mia Lanphear '19 On Monday, January 29, the Science Department hosted a "CSI Day" sponsored by the Montgomery County Detective Bureau with a special visit from an award-winning K9 from the Abington Police Department. The day started off with a student assembly led by Lt. Richard Neilsen, who presented the kinds of situations detectives run into on a daily basis. He also helped clarify the difference between real life detectives and the ones on "seen on TV," and also discussed the methods used on crime scenes to find evidence. Students also enjoyed a demonstration by Sergeant Jennifer Doyle and her dog, Bella from the Abington K-9 Unit. Sgt. Doyle showed Gwynedd the reason Bella placed first in the country and the kinds of responsibilities Bella carries out. Following the demonstration, the girls proceeded to their classes, where a few lucky math classes got to spend time with Bella and ask questions. Throughout the day, during each science class a different aspect of crime scene investigation will be focused on and demonstrated, including the Physics of Car Accidents & Distracted Driving, Laser Technology to Recreate Crime Scenes, Fingerprinting and Ballistic Science, the Bomb Squad and its Robot, and DNA Fingerprinting. These presentations were met with much enthusiasm from the girls and encouraged students to immerse themselves in the basics of forensic science. They got to better understand what it's like to be involved in criminal investigations.
