Mia Lanphear '19 and Olivia Manfrey '19

THE MERCY SISTERHOOD

by Mia Lanphear '19

To me, a person that embodies mercy is someone who is compassionate, accepting, and never hesitates to help others. They are not afraid to speak for what they believe in. During my time at Gwynedd, there are so many people who epitomize these traits and more, but there is one person that continues to inspire me to be more merciful every day. I met Olivia Manfrey sometime during my freshman year at Gwynedd. During our first year together, we were mostly friendly, as I struggled to open up to people I did not know. During Sophomore year, Olivia and I sat at the same table in art class and our beautiful friendship began.

I came to know Olivia on a deeper level than just the funny memes and TV show quotes we shared with each other. She and I bonded through our differences. During our years together at Gwynedd, there have been many difficult times for the both us. Together, I feel less alone because I know I always have Olivia to support me no matter what. Countless times, I have seen Olivia speak up for things that she believes in and it motivates me to do the same. Mercy is often seen as synonymous with compassion and forgiveness. Olivia is not only compassionate, but also caring, incredibly brave, welcoming, and overall kind. She greets all she meets with respect and acceptance and has never held a grudge. There will never be a day I am not proud to call her my friend.
