Congratulations to Addie Olsen and Anna Ridenour! Both girls have been named to the PMEA Region VI Orchestra!  Addie took 6th chair on cello, and Anna Ridenour is 1st chair on flute, which are both incredible achievements!  Well done, ladies!

FROM DR. KATHY MYERS, MUSIC DIRECTOR:

"I just returned from an outstanding PMEA District Orchestra concert at Pennridge High School.  I am not exaggerating when I say that I could have been in attendance of a Philadelphia Orchestra performance this afternoon with the level of accomplishment of these high school musicians - wow!  A couple of weeks ago I felt the same when I attended the District Chorus concert at Spring Ford High School. (Amanda Hornig and Chloe Thum).

The All-Catholic Orchestra will perform next Sat., Feb. 18th at 2:00 p.m. at Bonner & Prendergast High School.  Those student musicians are: Chloe Thum and Natalie Dolan, violin; Page Merlino, trumpet (1st chair), and Emma Palermo, flute."

MINISTRY & SERVICE

GEORGE VALENTINE AUCTION

Due to unanticipated school closings this past week, the George Valentine Auction has been rescheduled for Friday, February 16

The George Valentine Auction is Ministry & Service's biggest fundraiser of the year!  Items donated by the faculty, staff, and students will be auctioned off throughout the day in both silent auction and live auction formats.

This year we are donating to three wonderful causes:

  1. The education of women (one of the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy).  We are continuing our relationship with Alba Luz Salazar, a 23 year old Peruvian woman who resides with the Sisters of Mercy.  Alba is currently attending a university in Peru, majoring in accounting.  However, in Alba's current situation, she is unable to afford to pay for the rest of her education.  Being people of mercy, we have decided to make sure Alba finishes college and will step in to help fund the remainder of her education.
  2. Global Health Volunteers is a volunteer-based organization that focuses on the health and well-being of children around the world.  We reached out to Sister Mary Jo McGinley, a Sister of Mercy who works with the Global Health Volunteers and simply asked "How can we help?!"  She was very surprised and grateful that we are willing to help her in this great cause.  We started this direct partnership last year.  This year, not only will we be donating to this great cause, but we will be sending a group of students on one of our Service Immersion trips to Peru to help Global Health Volunteers in their mission!
  3. Mercy Focus on Haiti is a group of committed people who share a desire to respond in an effective way to ongoing human needs in Haiti started by the Sisters of Mercy. Mercy Focus on Haiti collaborates with the Religious of Jesus and Mary in ministry with the people of the Gros Morne area in Haiti. For the last two years, Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School has sent a group to Gros Morne, Haiti to help with their mission, and we are excited to do so again this year!

ART

PORTRAIT CASTING

Students in the Honors Art Studio 3 & Art History classes spent a block period casting their faces with plaster. A continuation of their study of the figure as a historical genre of art, these portrait casts will be creatively transformed into contemporary masks with mixed media that represent individual expression.

Mrs. Hohenstein shares that masks have played an important artistic role in the history of human sociology. They have existed in every culture with various spiritual, religious, celebratory, and entertaining purpose and significance. The human face is one of the most captivating subjects in art. People cannot resist looking at other people. Masks inspire thought and reflection about the self, others, and community because they represent transformation, disguise, symbolism, and emotion in visual communication.
