INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY Unfortunately, this week's snow storm caused Thurday's planned day of Alumnae speakers to be cancelled. However, faculty incorporated contributions women in history and female achievement into their teaching in celebration of International Women's Day. History teacher, Mrs. Derstine, shares how her classes celebrated throughout the week, by: -framing part of their study of WWI via a Carrie Chapman Catt quote; "The greatest thing to come out of the war was the emancipation of women." -engaging in studying The Hello Girls, Americas "First" Women Soldiers," and their heroic contribution to the war effort. Specifically, they discussed the area of communications technology as well as the Nurses and Red Cross workers who risked their lives to aid the troops. -completing research on Suffragists war time protest of the White House viewing Iron Jawed Angels and discussing the contributions of different women who made up the movement that gained women the right to vote. In the photo below, Mrs. Derstine and her class look at photos of Gwynedd Alumnae hanging in the school's Fine Arts Wing, to view how WWI impacted the fashions of the time.
