Mrs. Judy Edling Morrissey '79, P'15, '17 Business Administrator Earlier this month, during Gwynedd's Easter/spring break, a group of our students and faculty members traveled to Haiti to work with Mercy Beyond Boarders. The group visited various parts of the Haiti countryside while providing service to those in need. A member of Gwynedd's community who accompanied the students on this special journey was fellow "Mercy Girl" and Gwynedd's Business Administrator, Mrs. Judy Edling Morrissey '79, P'15, '17, who shares a reflection of the journey:
"I recently had the honor of a lifetime to travel to Haiti on an immersion trip with eleven fellow Mercy Girls. I was so proud to chaperone and witness these amazing young ladies show their beautiful Mercy colors. As we learned the needs and culture of the Haitian people, our girls immersed themselves in areas of service including feeding school children, painting a home for the disabled, and planting crops at an agronomy center, just to name a few. My life has truly come full circle from when I first entered the Gwynedd community 43 years ago. My two daughters joined the Circle of Mercy and are recent Gwynedd Alumnae who continue to live their Mercy values as successful college students. I am grateful each and every day for the opportunities I have been given in our Mercy Community."
REMEMBERING A FIRST LADY As the world mourns the passing of former First Lady, Barbara Bush, a number of Alumnae recall her visit to our red and gold corridors, along with members of her family, in 1993 as Gwynedd was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Fondly, one Alumna shares, "In 1993, this great lady came to my high school along with Laura Bush and one of her daughters. The Glee Club sang "You Are My Only One," to which she replied, "George Bush, YOU are MY only one". As a Sophomore in high school, I didn't understand the gravity of that comment...as a wife and mother, I totally get it. What an amazing lady; amazing couple." Another Alumna reminisces, "Barbara Bush deeply inspired me when I was in grade school when I read this speech of hers [The commencement address at the all-women Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, on June 1, 1990.The speech was ranked No. 47 on a list of the top speeches of the century in 1999.] ... so much so that I choose it to be my speech on the forensics team. I memorized every word and won quite a few awards in competitions reciting it with passion and conviction, but I was most proud of passing on her sweet sentiments. I still to this day love every bit of it." We were honored to host her and we are thankful for her inspiration.
On Friday, school safety training was conducted for Gwynedd administration, faculty, and staff. Presenters included experts from the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety and the Lower Gwynedd Police Department.
Mercy Girl Rising is a Gwynedd student-lead organization focused on the education of young girls in third world countries. This year, we are striving to build a small secondary school in Cameroon, Africa to further help these girls and their dream.
