GET TO KNOW GWYNEDD!

What we mean when we say we are a college-preparatory school…

To prepare our students for success in college, they need to enjoy high school first.  A Gwynedd Girl is ready for college but she is not rushed to get there.

Freshman year is the start of the journey - an exciting time for new Gwynedd Girls.  Our students are encouraged to try new things, such as joining a new club, volunteering for a service project, trying out for a team sport, or auditioning for the musical. They build new friendships, learn about leadership, and focus on studies.

Our Freshman Advisory Class supports our students through the high school transition.  Students are introduced to Naviance, software designed to assist with the college and career exploration process, in the later part of freshmen year.

PAL (Peer Advisory League) is a program run by upperclassmen who serve as peer mentors to small groups of freshmen.  Under the direction of a faculty advisor, PAL groups meet regularly through freshmen year to discuss the realities of transitioning to high school well as important adolescent issues.

Our curriculum is designed to give our freshmen the proper foundation upon which they can build upon over the next three years and beyond!

College Counseling

The mission of the College Counseling Department at Gwynedd Mercy is to guide students through the college process from start to finish. Our students accomplish incredible things inside and outside of the classroom at Gwynedd Mercy. In many ways, the college process feels like a culmination of these achievements as students move on to their next academic home. Our goal is to bring joy to the college process and celebrate the amazing young women that walk through our halls.

Programmatically, we have college advisory classes and presentations that meet our students at each step of her college journey. Starting in freshman year we start with goal setting and character strengths exploration.

During sophomore year, our students complete a year-long career explorations course and a standardized testing evening program provides the ins and outs of college admissions test planning. The college curriculum is very robust during junior year with a college advisory class, semester-long essay writing workshop, college fair with mock interviews and many individual meetings with a college counselor. We also have several evening programs specific to application checklists, college visit planning, and preparing to submit applications. Our seniors appreciate the open-door policy during the fall of their senior year when they are in the midst of submitting applications. We provide continued programming and time-management support during this busy time for our seniors.

Beyond the programmatic, classroom, and counseling supports we provide students throughout their time at Gwynedd Mercy, College Counseling also finds relationship building with colleges and universities as instrumental in our role of advising students. We are constantly in communication with colleges learning the latest in admissions statistics and new majors/programs on college campuses. We enjoy maintaining close ties with admissions officers at colleges across the country so that we can partner to find the right home for our Gwynedd Mercy students. Our college counselors aim to visit about 10 college campuses per year so that we too know what campuses "feel" like – this year we have visited colleges in PA, CO, CA, AZ, FL, VA, and TN!

It might seem daunting to think ahead to the college application process as you are just completing the high school process. We want you to know that your daughter will be well taken care of at Gwynedd Mercy. Our intention is to make the process as stress-free as possible and bring joy to the process. Your daughters are amazing young women and they deserve to be celebrated. They truly are the future!

HONORS PHYSICS

Image

Mrs. Conaway's Honors Physics classes designed parachutes out of various materials, shapes and sizes, and lengths of thread or ribbon. This STEM lab offered students an engineering perspective on air resistance vs. gravity.  Many instinctively used "expertise" from life experiences.  Materials such as tissue paper, plastic bags, and dryer sheets as well as nylon, cotton and linen had various levels of success.

Students calculated the time of free fall for an object to drop from 2.60m height.  They then were able to compare the effects of the parachute's ability to capture air and slow the rate of descent to a terminal velocity.

HONORS SPANISH III

Sra. Cheeseman's Honors Spanish 3 classes made a 'Busca deTesoro' (Treasure Hunt) for their classmates using Formal Commands en español.

First, each partner group had to write out 10 steps for their fellow classmates to find the "treasure". Then the hunt began!  A few of the teachers got involved along the way, including Mercy the dog! The students enjoyed the thrill of the search, and Mercy enjoyed her treats! Buen trabajo, chicas!

MODEL UN CLUB

Image

Gwynedd's newly founded Model UN Club attended its first conference the weekend of February 2nd at American University in Washington D.C.  Founders, Mia Lanphear and Victoria Borlando, attended a one day training conference at American University in November. Since then they have recruited several other members building the GMA delegation to six for this three day, competitive conference.

The girls have been assigned different positions and had to do research to prepare for the conference. Their assigned roles range from executives at Exxon Mobile and Sinopec, to the Premier of North Korea, to representatives from the Republic of Armenia. They are learning so much and hope to bring that knowledge back to GMA to further grow the Model UN program.
