Our Fundraising Initiatives
The leaves of a four-leaf clover, representing our fourth annual pub night, are said to stand for faith, hope, love, and success -- all things we wish for our girls! This year, our McAuley's Pub Night proceeds will fund classroom enhancements to advance Gwynedd Mercy's "She is the Future" strategic plan initiatives in academic innovation and wellness and a new school golf cart to support extracurricular activities and event accessibility.
Stay tuned, as our enhanced classroom rendering will be posted soon!
Who is McAuley?
McAuley's Pub is named for Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy and the inspiration behind Gwynedd Mercy's strategic plan, "She is the Future." Catherine's can-do attitude turned her experience of poverty and the subjugation of women in 19th century Ireland into centuries of academic opportunities for girls, empowering them to achieve their full potential and to make a difference in the world.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1778, Catherine witnessed her parents living their Catholic faith through service to the poor and became inspired. At the age of 25, she was invited to be a live-in companion to a wealthy retired couple, and her faith and loving care for them and those in need inspired them to leave her their fortune.
With her inheritance, Catherine purchased property in Dublin and opened the first “House of Mercy” on Baggot Street in 1827 to care for those in need. The building included a church, school, a work area for job training, and dormitories for the poor and any women who wished to join Catherine in her ministry.
In 1831, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy. In the 10 years between the founding and her death in 1841, Catherine established 14 independent foundations in Ireland and England. Today there are more than 6,000 Sisters of Mercy worldwide, and the order is recognized for having started many education and health care facilities around the globe.
