There are many benefits to donating appreciated securities to Gwynedd Mercy: 1) you receive the same income tax savings you would if you wrote a check or made a credit card gift online, 2) you have the added benefit of eliminating capital gains taxes on the transfer, which can be as high as 20 percent, and 3) your dollar goes further than if you were to sell the stock and donate the cash because the money you would have paid in taxes can instead go fully to the Gwynedd, maximizing your philanthropic impact of our Mercy mission.

Making a gift of appreciated securities also is as easy as instructing your broker to transfer the shares. Below is the information you need to assist in facilitating your stock transfer:

A matching gift occurs when participating companies match (sometimes up to double or triple) the amount donated to Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School by employees, spouses, or retirees. Check with your company’s Matching Gift Coordinator, (usually in the Human Resources department), obtain a matching gift form, fill it out and return with your contribution.

The Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Programs give individuals and businesses the opportunity to redirect their state tax dollars to Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School in support of need-based scholarships for qualifying students. Click here to learn more.

Do you have an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)? Are you at least age 70½ (or soon will be) and subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)? Do you donate to Gwynedd Mercy and other charities? If you answered “yes” to all three questions then a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), often called an IRA Charitable Rollover, may save you taxes. Making a QCD is a tax-wise strategy that allows you to transfer up to $100,000 per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity, like Gwynedd Mercy. It is only available to individuals with Traditional, Rollover or Inherited IRAs, and inactive SEP and SIMPLE plans. Any amount processed as a QCD counts toward your RMD and reduces the taxable amount of your IRA distribution. This lowers both your adjusted gross income (AGI) and taxable income, resulting in a lower overall tax liability. And it may save you on other taxes too.
